Alan Kitching Design Talk
Design Event's next Design Talk is with world-renowned typographer, designer and letterpress practitioner Alan Kitching.
Alan's career began as an apprentice compositor in 1956 and led to establishing his own design practice in London in 1973. The Typography Workshop began in Clerkenwell in 1989 and Alan’s collaboration with designer and writer Celia Stothard followed in 1994 resulting in various joint projects, teaching workshops and the purchase of letterpress materials. Together they established The Typography Workshop printroom and studio in Lambeth in 2005.
Alan was appointed Royal Designer for Industry (RDI) and elected member of Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI) in 1994. He was made Fellow of the Royal College of Art (FRCA) in 1998, and Visiting Professor at the London Institute (University of the Arts London) in 2001.
Through the traditional techniques of letterpress printing, employing wood and metal type, relief printing processes and an assortment of presses, Alan produces unique graphic images which have featured on postage stamps, theatre posters and billboards as well as compositions for corporate identities, magazine and book covers, and illustrations. In some instances his images have been printed as multiples in small editions.
